How To

How to drive a nails in wood

The first step in driving a nail into wood is to choose the correct size and type of hammer. There are many types of hammers that you will find: claw hammers and sledgehammers; mallets; ball peen hammers; and hatchets. Each type of tool has its advantages and drawbacks. A clawhammer works best when hitting something hard like nails. However, it can sometimes be difficult to see exactly where the strike is going. A sledgehammer allows you to hit large areas simultaneously, but it is too heavy and cumbersome to use for small tasks.

Once you have chosen the right hammer for you, put your hand flat against its side so that it rests comfortably in the palm of your hand. Grab the handle tightly, but do not squeeze too hard. You should hold the hammer straight-up, with your wrist still relaxed. Then swing the hammer back toward the ground, aiming for the center of the nail. You should feel the impact on the nail from the hammer. You can practice swinging the hammer with a block or wood until you feel the rhythm.

Once you are ready to drive the nail, place the hammer close to your body. The nail should be perpendicular to wood's surface. Keep your eyes on the tip. Swing your hammer forward. Then follow through with the motions of the hammerhead. This can be repeated several times to increase the speed of your swing. Once you've mastered the technique, try adding power to your swings. Then, raise the hammer from your shoulder to bring it down. You'll have more energy to work with.

Once you've made the first nail hole, take out the hammer. The rest of the nails can be pulled out using a screwdriver, pry bar, or a hammer. Keep the nail heads parallel to the board's surfaces in order to avoid splitting wood.
