In order to support the mission of Eagle Ranch, the Chattahoochee Woodturners worked with the organization to build a woodturning studio on the school campus. The American Association of Woodturners gave an Educational Opportunity Grant, as well as other donations, to help them build the facility. Local woodturners donated tools and equipment to get the project off the ground. The woodturning studio is open to all students, as is a woodshop for adults with a handicap.

Hark Woodturner

Hark, a resident tutor, approached Hark eight years ago after a class. Hark accepted his offer to teach the Harvard class. After several attempts at teaching the course at Harvard, he finally recovered an old unused lathe from the basement of a neighboring building, and his first Harvard class began that spring. Today, students from all Harvard Houses are welcome to attend the woodturning studio's classes, and he continues to teach woodturning on the weekends.

In addition to teaching classes, Arthur and Pamela have traveled to woodworking symposiums and trade shows in search of new audiences for their work. They have hosted guests from many world-famous artists and met them. They have hosted woodturning workshops with a wide variety of artists, from new to well-known, and they have sent a Knight or Commander to the Norwegian Woodturning Cruise that is held every three year.

How To

How to stain wooden surfaces

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction causes the wood color to change from white and brownish red. Oak is the most commonly used wood for staining, but other woods can also be stained.

There are many options for applying stains to wood surfaces. Some methods include mixing the stain along with a solvent like turpentine and then applying the mixture to the wood by brushing or spraying. Other methods use a solution of water and dye applied directly to the wood. The stain can be mixed with paints and varnishes to become part of the final coating.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. The wood must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all grease and dirt. Sanding smoothens scratches and rough spots. You must then decide on the type of stain that you wish to use. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating colors penetrate deeper into wood than those that are non-penetrating. This makes them more suitable for darker colors, such as mahogany. Non-penetrating stains work best with light colors like maple.

Once you have decided on the stain type that you want, get your tools ready. Because you can spread the stain evenly with a paintbrush, it is ideal for applying them. It is a good idea to have rags on hand in case you need them to clean up any stains that may remain after you have finished painting. If you intend to mix the stain yourself you will need enough containers to hold all the components.

Once you have prepared your materials, start by cleaning the area where you plan to stain the wood. You can remove grime and dirt with warm water and soap. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

Next, apply the stain. Start at one end of the piece of furniture and brush or spray the stain onto the wood. Move slowly and carefully along the grain of your wood until you reach its opposite end. Make sure that the stain does not drip off the edge of the wood. Before proceeding to the next step, let the stain dry thoroughly.

A coat of clear polyurethane sealing agent is applied to protect the paint. Apply three coats polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat of polyurethane sealer to dry overnight before applying the final coat.
